4th and 5th Grade Electricity Vocabulary

1.      Atom—the basic building block of matter
2.      Conductors—material through which electric charges move easily
3.      Current—a flow of air, water, or electricity
4.      Current electricity—negative charges flowing in one direction through matter
5.      Electrons—the negatively charged particles found in all atoms
6.      Insulators—materials through which electricity does not move easily
7.      Lightning—static electricity built up during a mature thunderstorm
8.      Neutrons—particles contained in the nucleus of an atom that carries a neutral charge
9.      Protons—the charged particles of an atoms that carry a positive charge
10.  Static Electricity—build up of electrical charges
11.  Switch—a device that control the flow of an electric current
12.  Temperature—the measure of the motion of molecules
13.  Thermal energy—the energy of the motion of particles in matter
