4th Grade--Vocabulary 109-121


109.     atom—the basic building block of matter

110.     dense—compacted and heavy

111.     gas—state of matter without a definite shape or volume

112.     liquid—state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape

113.     mass—amount of matter in an object

114.     matter—anything that has mass and takes up space

115.     mixture—different types of matter mixed together

116.     solid—state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume

117.     solute—the solid part of a solution

118.     solution—a mixture of two or more substances

119.     solvent—a liquid used to dissolve other substances

120.     suspension—a mixture where you have to shake it to make it become one mixture

5th Grade--Lesson 3

This is a long list.  Therefore, the test will be next Friday, January 17th.

1.      Asteroid—a large piece of space rock with an irregular shape.

2.      Comet—a space object made up of dust and ice.

3.      Dwarf planet—a round space object that is smaller than a planet, is not a moon, and revolves around a star along with other similar space objects.

4.      Elliptical—like a flattened circle or oval.

5.      Gravity—a force of attraction between two objects.

6.      Inner planet—one of four small, rocky planets closest to the sun (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars)

7.      Meteor—a streak of light produced by a meteoroid burning up in its path toward Earth.

8.      Meteorite—A meteoroid or piece of a meteoroid that lands on Earth.

9.      Meteoroid—A rocky body with an irregular shape that is smaller than an asteroid.

10.  Moon—a natural object that moves in a path around a planet.

11.  Orbit—a path around a star or planet.

12.  Outer planet—one of the four giant gas planets farthest from the sun (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune)

13.  Planet—a large, round object that revolves around a star.

14.  Revolve—to move in a fixed path around another object.

15.  Solar system—the sun, Earth, all the other planets, and all the objects that travel around the sun.

16.  Star—a giant sphere of gases that produces light and heat.
 
17. Telescope—a tool that makes objects that are very far away appear much closer.

1.  caverns—a large cave formed by groundwater dissolving limestone

2.  caves—an empty place under the ground, often with an opening in the side of a hill

3.  igneous—rocks that formed when magma or melted rock from deep inside the earth rises and cools

4.  limestone—sedimentary rock where most caves are formed

5.  metamorphic—rocks that change due to heat and pressure
