Lesson 5--5th Grade Vocabulary


Lesson 5

 1.                  Axis—an imaginary line that goes through the middle of Earth and connects the North and South poles

2.                  Day—a period of 24 hours, or the time it takes Earth to rotate once on its axis

3.                  Equator—an imaginary line around the middle of Earth. 

4.                  Horizon—the line where Earth appears to meet the sky

5.                  Model—something that represents a real object, system, or process

6.                  Northern Hemisphere—the half of Earth located north of the equator

7.                  Rotate—to spin on an axis

8.                  Southern Hemisphere—the half of Earth located south of the equator

9.                  Year—about 365 days, or the time it takes Earth to revolve once around the sun

10.              Estimate—to make a careful guess about an amount or value

11.              Measure—to use a tool to find a number to describe an amount or value

12.         Star—a giant sphere of gases that produces light and heat
